词汇 harrier
词源
harrier. Harriers were a breed of small hounds developed to hunt hares long before the word was used as a synonym for cross-country runners. The application of the word to human runners arose out of a game called “hounds and hares” or the “paper chase,” in which one team of runners (the hares) would run through the woods leaving a trail of paper scraps that the other team (the hounds) would follow, trying to catch the hares before they reached the finish line. The name harrier was soon given to the “hounds” and finally it became a synonym for all cross-country runners. See paper chase.
