Nero of the North. In 1520, at Stockholm, King Christian II of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden (1481–1559) massacred some 100 Swedish nobility. Soon after this the despot became known as the Nero of the North, and the Swedes and Norwe- gians rose up against him, the Swedes raising Gustavus I to the throne. At home in Denmark, Christian became hated for such acts as putting the mother of his mistress in charge of the nation’s finances. Also called Christian the Cruel, he wound up spending the last 24 years of his life in jail. See nero. |
