词汇 | nepotism |
词源 | nepotism. Deriving directly from the Latin nepos, “a de- scendant, especially a nephew,” nepotism was coined when Pope Alexander VI (1431–1501), the most notorious of politi- cal popes, filled important church offices with his relations. Among the many family appointments the Spaniard Rodrigo Borgia made to consolidate his political power were the install- ing of his son Cesare as an archbishop when the boy was only 16 and the bestowing of a cardinal’s hat on his young nephew Gio- vanni. Alexander’s detractors were so many and so widespead that the new term soon entered all the languages of Europe, re- ferring not only to politics but to business and any other place where such favoritism was practiced. |
