It’s hard to imagine this expres- sion having its roots in war, but it does. Later the word changed in meaning, describing someone sent ahead to obtain lodging for a party of travelers, and finally it came to mean someone who goes forth in advance to announce the coming of travelers or things—like the swallow, robin, and other harbin- gers of spring.
