nevermore. Edgar Allan Poe was not the first or last to “quoth” the word, symbol of darkest doubts, in his poem “The Raven” (1845). Here is a sample from William Faulkner’s Absa- lom, Absalom (1936): “Quentin didn’t answer. He lay still and rigid on his back . . . breathing hard hot slow, his eyes wide open upon the window, thinking ‘Nevermore Nevermore Nevermore.’ ” |
