To see red, “to be roused to violent anger,” comes from the older saying “to wave a red flag at a bull.” The expres- sion became popular in America during this century, deriving of course from the waving of a red cape to rouse the bull in bullfights. No matter that bulls are color blind. The misconcep- tion is so widespread and red is so universally associated with violence that the words will be with us long after bullfighting is banned. |
