bucket letter. During the largely ineffective administration of President John Quincy Adams, a series of anonymous letters were sent to the president by David Holt of Georgia, writing under the pseudonym Edward Bucket. These letters, widely published, became familiar to many Americans, and for a number of years a bucket letter became the name for any anon- ymous letter. Such a letter was also called a “bucket.” |
