undine. An undine is a female water spirit, one of the ele- mental spirits, the spirit of the waters. The word was coined by Paracelsus from the neo-Latin unda, “a wave.” Undine, in the 1811 tale of the same name by German author Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, obtains a soul by marrying a mortal and bearing him a child. |
