brucine. Another poison named for a real person, but this time not for someone who used it for nefarious purposes. Bru- cine is a bitter, poisonous vegetable alkaloid found in seeds of various Strychnos species, especially Nux vomica. It resembles strychnine, though it isn’t as powerful and it is rapidly elimi- nated from the body. Brucine, used in the denaturing of alco- hol, was named for the apparently innocent Scottish traveler and explorer, James Bruce (1730–94), who merely discovered it. See acqua tofana. |
