Thomas Carlyle invented the word environ- ment (from the English environ) in its modern meaning of “the aggregate of external circumstances, conditions, and things that affect the existence and development of an individual, or- ganism, or group.” The word, first recorded in 1827, is his ren- dering of the German Umgebung, meaning the same, which had apparently been coined by Goethe. |
