词汇 | mad prince |
词源 | Mad Prince. An old name for Hamlet, the complex central figure of Shakespeare’s play. George Jones, a British actor who immigrated to the United States in 1838 and changed his name to Count Johannes, for some reason became obsessed with the role of Hamlet. As the years passed, he played the role more and more, until it was the only part he would accept. But the count unfortunately got worse, not better, with each performance. Soon audiences began booing him; he was hooted and jeered off the stage. Jones, probably insane to begin with, grew so mad that he took to gibbering insanely on the stage. Finally, no pro- ducer would have him, even as a curiosity, and he was forced to retire. The mad actor, one early critic said, had become too mad to play the Mad Prince. |
