词汇 | mademoiselle from armentières |
词源 | Mademoiselle from Armentières. This British army song (1916) is one of the few good songs left from World War I, but is at least a better inheritance than that vicious war itself. The song was suggested by the older tune “Three Prussian Officers Crossed the Rhine,” and, despite being the scene of heavy fight- ing during the war, Armentières was remembered mainly by the lyrics. The lines most people seem to know: Mademoiselle from Armentières, parlez-vous. Mademoiselle from Armentières, parlez-vous. Mademoiselle from Armentières, hasn’t been kissed in 40 years. Inky, dinky, parlez-vous . . . |
