Brevoortia Ida-Maia. The floral firecracker, as this plant is popularly called, shows how oddly things sometimes get their names. Ida May, the daughter of a 19th-century Califor- nia stagecoach driver, had noticed the bulbous plant many times in her travels and pointed it out to Alphonso Wood, a naturalist always interested in collecting botanical specimens. Wood named the single plant, a member of the lily family Brevoortia Ida-Maia, its prenomen in honor of his fellow American naturalist J. C. Brevoort, and its patronym in grati- tude to the observant little girl who had brought the scarlet- flowered perennial to his attention. |
