词汇 | brazen guts |
词源 | Brazen Guts. Didymus of Alexandria (ca. 65 b.c.-a.d. 10) was nicknamed Chalkenteros (Brazen Guts or Bronze Guts) by his Greek contemporaries because of his enormous literary output. Didymus actually wrote a stunning 3,500 to 4,000 books over his 45-year lifespan—assuming that he started writing when age 18, that’s roughly 148 books a year, 12 or so a month, about three a week—according to Lionel Casson’s Libraries in the An- cient World (2000). No other author comes close, not even Lope de Vega with his 1,500 plays (see es lope). Yet only fragments of Brazen Gut’s “vast and varied work” survive. |
