This is a familiar biblical injunc- tion, from Matt. 7:6: “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” John Wyclif, commenting on the passage in 1380, added that “men should not give holy things to hounds,” a phrase that has been used much more sparingly.
