Catawaba. Catawaba, an oral language with no written form, lost its last speaker early in 1996 with the death of Red Thunder Cloud. It is said that Red Thunder Cloud prayed in Catawba every night and that with his final prayer the language died. According to Carl Teeter, emeritus professor of linguistics at Harvard University, “There were once about 500 [American Indi- an] languages in North America.
