词汇 | catch a crab |
词源 | catch a crab. When an oarsman catches a crab he of course doesn’t literally catch one on his oar. The expression, dating back to the 19th century, means that the oarsman has slowed down the speed of the boat either by missing the water on a stroke, or, more commonly, by making a poor, awkward stroke that doesn’t completely clear the water when completed. |
