brass ankle. This often derogatory name for a person of mixed race was first recorded in 1930, according to The Ran- dom House Historical Dictionary of American Slang. However, the words are probably considerably older. One possible expla- nation has the term deriving from Portuguese settlers in South Carolina who intermarried with local blacks. These racially mixed people then tended to marry within their own group. Noted for the brass anklets they liked to wear and their dark skin, they came to be known as brass ankles or black ankles. |
