Not many Zulu words have come into the English language, but South African English includes the phrase monkey’s wedding, rain and sunshine coming at the same time, which is said to be the translation of a Zulu expression meaning the same. No one knows, however, what a monkey’s wedding has to do with mixed rain and sunshine. Perhaps there is a fable explaining the phrase, but no one has found it. |
