rosary. The string of beads used by Roman Catholics to count repetitions of certain prayers is said to be so named because the first ones were made of rosewood, a hard, reddish, black- streaked wood that often has a roselike odor and comes from several tropical trees, including Dalbergia nigra and Pterocar- pus erinaceus, the African rosewood, or molompi. Another theory is that it takes its name from the “Mystical Rose,” one of the titles of the Virgin Mary. |
