roscoe. A pistol or revolver. This old American slang word was first recorded at the end of the 19th century, but its origin is unknown. Maybe a criminal named Roscoe is involved, but I haven’t found him. The male name Roscoe comes from the Germanic words meaning “swift horse.” One Roscoe with something named after him is William Roscoe (1753–1831), a British philanthropist and historian who has the American bird Roscoe’s Yellowthroat honoring his patronym. |
