take under one’s wing. A very old expression that was origi- nally in the plural and alludes of course to a hen protecting her chicks under her wings. The source of the phrase is biblical, the famous passage from Matt. 23:37: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered my children to- gether, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” |
