suburb. Suburb derives from the Latin sub, near, and urb, city. It usually means a residential area outside a city. Weekley tells us that “ ‘suburban,’ in a disparaging sense, is due to By- ron.” Weekley is referring here to the great British poet’s use of suburbanite in his poem Beppo (1818), “his first work in the ironic, colloquial style which was to lead him to Don Juan.” See exurb. |
