词源 | H. H can be traced back, through the Roman and Greek al- phabets, to the Phoenician alphabet, where the letter was called Heth and represented a fence, having two crossbars instead of one: The reason Dr. Johnson made his famous remark “I’d rath- er dine with Jack Ketch [the public hangman] than Jack Wilkes” is seldom told. John Wilkes had written a comic review of Johnson’s Dictionary in which he addressed the great man’s pronouncement that “The letter ’h’ seldom, perhaps never, be- gins any but the first syllable.” Wilkes wrote: “The author of this observation must be a man of quick apprehension and of a most comprehensive genius,” going on in the same fashion for several paragraphs. Johnson never forgave him. |
