blow his, her, own horn. The term blowhard, for “a brag- gart,” can be traced back to the American West in about 1855. To blow your own horn, or “to promote yourself,” derives from a much older expression, to blow your own trumpet, which goes as far back as 1576. Such “hornblowing” may have its origins in medieval times, when heralds blew their trumpets to announce the arrival of royalty but commoners such as street vendors had to blow their own horns. |
