burgundy. Burgundy wines are usually red wines made from grapes from the French province of Burgundy, espe- cially the area between Dijon and Chalons. The province, in turn, takes its name from the Medieval Latin Burgundia, land of the Burgunds (a German tribe). When one thinks of burgundy, one often remembers James Thurber’s famous put-down in a caption to a New Yorker cartoon depicting a wine- snob saying to another: “It’s a naive domestic Burgundy without any breeding, but I think you’ll be amused by its presumption.” |
