burbs; suburb. For better or worse, burbs has been American slang for suburbs for the last decade or so. I record it here main- ly because I haven’t seen it in any dictionary. Suburbs wasn’t used much in America until about 1940, though the word dates back to 14th-century England, where it meant residential areas outside a town or city, deriving from the Latin suburbium, formed from sub, “near,” and urbs, “city.” |
