词汇 | blooper |
词源 | blooper. Blooper has meant a clumsy mistake or blunder, a faux pas, since 1925, and has meant a puny hit in baseball since about the same time. No one is sure which usage came first. Blooper for a long, looping punch in boxing is also a contender. One dictionary says the word blooper was originally in refer- ence to “a radio receiver that emits bloops,” while another claims it is “from the high-pitched sound of interference in a radio signal and from the sound made by hitting a ball weakly.” |
