The straw that is left af- ter grain has been separated from a crop is worth very little compared with the grain, and a single straw has almost no val- ue. People have known this since earliest times, which is why not to care a straw is probably much older than even its earliest recorded use in 1290. Among other great English writers, Chaucer and Shakespeare used the phrase or one of its varia- tions such as not to care two straws, or not to care three straws. |
