no ka de. A good example of one of the ways English words are used in Japan. Foreign borrowings (not only, but mostly, En- glish, and including technical terms) total about 100,000 words, fully one-third of the Japanese vocabulary. No ka de is the Japa- nizing of the English words no car day. In Japan it is the day of the month when certain drivers are not allowed to use their cars. To help curb air pollution every driver is assigned a cer- tain “no car day.” |
