The germ of the idea behind this saying goes all the way back to the Ro- man poet Quintus Curtius of the first century a.d., who wrote: “The deepest rivers flow with the least sound.” Later, in 1580, the British writer John Lyly (see euphuism) wrote: “Where the streame runneth smoothest, the water is deepest.” Finally, in Henry VI (1591) Shakespeare borrowed and improved a bit upon both with “Smooth runs the water where the brook is deep.”
