词汇 still waters run deep
词源
still waters run deep. Someone quiet on the outside is more worthwhile or even dangerous than any bigmouth. The germ of the idea behind this saying goes all the way back to the Ro- man poet Quintus Curtius of the first century a.d., who wrote: “The deepest rivers flow with the least sound.” Later, in 1580, the British writer John Lyly (see euphuism) wrote: “Where the streame runneth smoothest, the water is deepest.” Finally, in Henry VI (1591) Shakespeare borrowed and improved a bit upon both with “Smooth runs the water where the brook is deep.”
