词汇 | sniper |
词源 | sniper. The snipe is a wary, quick bird that hunters had no success with in England until the bow and arrow was replaced with the gun in the 16th century. Even then the bird was diffi- cult to bag unless the hunter concealed himself and patiently waited for a good shot. Snipe shooting became a favorite sport because of its difficulty, and because of the snipe hunter’s modus operandi, the word sniper came to mean any marksman firing from a concealed position. |
