词汇 | snake pit |
词源 | snake pit; cuckoo nest. M. J. Ward’s bestselling novel The Snake Pit (1947), which was made into a movie nominated for an Academy Award in 1948, gave us the expression snake pit for a mental hospital where deplorable conditions prevail. Sim- ilarly, Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962), also made into an award-winning film, helped popularize the term cuckoo nest for a psychiatric hospital. However, cuckoo nest was recorded as “a crazy place” two years before Kesey’s ti- tle, in an episode of the TV series The Many Lives of Dobie Gil- lis, and the term cuckoo house for an insane asylum dates back to at least 1930. Cuckoo for an insane person is a British coin- age of the late 19th century, though it first meant a stupid per- son. See cuckoo. |
