sneakers. The first sneakers were made in 1868 but the ath- letic shoes weren’t called sneakers until about 1895. Once worn in many sports, the fabric and rubber shoes may have been so named because baseball players “stealing” bases favored them, or because thieves found them useful in their line of work. The word is an Americanism made, of course, from the word sneak. The British call these shoes plimsolls. See also plimsoll marks. |
