good-bye. Good-bye derives from the words God be with you, its first recorded use in a 1573 letter. Earlier forms of God be with you were God be wy you, godbwye, god bwy ye and good- b’wy. Why then is good instead of god in the current expression? Probably because, most etymologists agree, the new word’s for- mation was influenced by the expression good day. |
