Correspondent Madolin Johnson Wells advises that her mother often used this old-fashioned expression when startled or upset, as in “Good honk (pronounced “good haohonk”), Lon, what’ve you done?” In rare cases of extreme emphasis, Mrs. Wells writes, her mother would say, “ ‘Great honks!’ which conjured images of a strange bird or a mythi- cal god.” American playwright Meredith Willson used the phrase “Great honks!” for the same purpose in his hit play The Music Man.
