词汇 broadway
词源
Broadway; B’way. By the mid-19th century most New York playhouses were located on Broadway or nearby, but the name Broadway wasn’t used to attract customers until 1800, when The Black Crook, a strange hybrid of ballet and melodrama, was produced. This extravaganza ran over a year on Broadway and toured for more than 20 years, advertising itself as “the original Broadway production.” After that the name Broadway was commonly used both in describing a successful touring com- pany and in attracting visitors to New York as well. The Black Crook also did much to further burlesque, employing a long line of chorus girls in flesh-colored tights, which proved sensa- tional at the time. Broadway is, of course, the best-known street in New York City, though rivaled in fame by Wall Street, Park Avenue, and Fifth Avenue. According to the Dictionary of Americanisms, the first recorded use of the name Broadway for the street was 1673; before then it had been called High Street. Originally an Indian trail, it now runs 17 miles through Man- hattan and four miles through the Bronx. It has been called the longest street in the world, but doesn’t come close, the record being held by Toronto’s 1,178.3-mile-long Yonge Street. Col- umnist Walter Winchell may have coined the popular spelling B’way. See great white way.
