词汇 | jack-in-the-pulpit |
词源 | Jack-in-the-pulpit. The upright spadix of Arisaema triphyl- lum is arched over by a green or striped spathe, which to early American settlers made it look like a man (Jack) standing in a pulpit, resulting in the common name Jack-in-the-pulpit. In parts of Great Britain it is known, perhaps more aptly, as “priest’s pintle,” the latter word meaning “penis.” |
