词汇 jackanapes
词源
jackanapes. Applied to any pretentious upstart who apes his betters, the word jackanapes probably comes from the nick- name of William de la Pole, duke of Suffolk. Jack was a com- mon name for a tame male ape in England at the time (attached to the word, as it was to jackrabbit, jackass, and others), and Suffolk’s coat of arms bore the clog and chain of a trained mon- key. When, in 1450, the duke was arrested and beheaded at sea off Dover for alleged treason against Henry VI, he was derisive- ly styled “the Ape-clogge” and later won the nickname Jack Napes, or Jacknapes. The ending might mean “of Naples,” the source of apes brought to England in the early 15th century, but there is little doubt that the word earned its popularity and present meaning through Suffolk’s nickname, which was even recorded in a satirical song of the day.
