词汇 | bagel |
词源 | bagel; bialy. “Bagels, begorrah!” Macy’s bakery once adver- tised on St. Patrick’s Day in our word-rich land. Bagel derives from the Middle High German bouc, “bracelet,” which became the Yiddish beggel—the bagel, of course, resembling a bracelet in shape. The roll topped with onion flakes called a bialy (plural bialys, not bialies) takes its name from Bialystok, Poland, where it was first made. Bialystok, played by Zero Mostel in The Pro- ducers, is one of the great comic characters in movie history. |
