blockbuster. The powerful high-explosive bomb called a blockbuster dates back to the beginning of World War II, when the bombs and word seem to have been invented by U.S. ord- nance. It was applied to anything big or powerful. In the early 1950s a blockbuster came to mean any real estate agent who convinced whites to sell their homes by creating fears that blacks were moving into their block or area.
