词汇 | blockbuster |
词源 | blockbuster. The powerful high-explosive bomb called a blockbuster dates back to the beginning of World War II, when the bombs and word seem to have been invented by U.S. ord- nance. It was applied to anything big or powerful. In the early 1950s a blockbuster came to mean any real estate agent who convinced whites to sell their homes by creating fears that blacks were moving into their block or area. Like the bomb, they bust up blocks. An alternate meaning is anything or any- one who is successful, effective, extravagant, etc. See moab. |
