An old Roman coin of little value called the quin- cunx had five dots or dashes on its face (one in each corner and one in the center), indicating that it was worth five-twelfths of an as. Any like arrangement of five objects, especially trees in a square or rectangle, is also called a quincunx, after the mark- ings on the ancient coin. |
