black frost. Long a name for a severe frost that kills plants, sometimes turning them black or blackish; a killing frost, as op- posed to a slight or light frost. The average time of the first black frost depends primarily upon the area of the country, and some U.S. areas (such as Key West, Florida) have no black frosts.
