bib. A paper attached to the outer clothes of a runner, espe- cially a marathon runner, which provides the runner’s bib number or identity number. The use of bib in sports is probably a recent one; in fact it doesn’t seem to have been used to any ex- tent until the 1970s. Usually, it would just be called one’s number: “Did you get your number yet?” Bib in a sports sense derives from the piece of clothing designed to protect a child’s clothing while the child is eating. |
