Naumachia. Roman emperors held “sea battles” on land in the Naumachia (from the Greek for “sea battle”), a flooded am- phitheater Augustus built on the right bank of the Tiber River. The combatants in the two opposing fleets, who were usually prisoners or criminals, fought to the death unless spared by the emperor. As many as 24 triremes fought in these bloody contests. |
