In 1886 John Roberts, a Member of Parlia- ment, sponsored the Sunday Closing Act for Wales, the law closing all pubs on Sundays. Confirmed drinkers took revenge by giving the name John Roberts to a large tankard that they filled on Saturday night with enough beer to last them through Sunday.
