mussel. Both the muscles in our bodies and the mussels in the sea take their name from the common house mouse. The early Romans rather whimsically thought that body muscles, appearing and disappearing as men competed in athletic games and then rested, resembled tiny mice appearing and disappear- ing at play. Similarly, little dark-colored mice were also thought to resemble the dark-colored marine bivalves the Romans liked to serve at their banquets. Thus, both the muscle and the mus- sel were named musculus, or “little mouse.” The marine mus- sel’s name is spelled differently today only because this makes it easier to distinguish it from muscle.
