beach glass. Small pieces of glass from broken bottles that are made opaque over time by the movements of tide and sand. They come in as many colors as there are broken-bottle colors on the beach, and some collectors make bracelets, necklaces, and earrings from them. I don’t know why no dictionary rec- ords this beachcombing treasure. My mother called them pov- erty gems and poorman’s diamonds. Howard Moss (1922–87) wrote a lovely poem called “Beach Glass,” first published, if I remember well, in The New Yorker, whose poetry he edited for many years. Also called sea glass. |
