Jew. Jew comes from the German Jude, which is a shortened form of Yehuda, the name of the Jewish Commonwealth in the period of the Second Temple. Since the Commonwealth’s name derived from the name of Jacob’s son Yehuda (Judah), both Jew and Jewish ultimately derive from this proper name. Jew is first recorded in English in 1275, in the form of Gyu. See buddhism; christian; holocaust; mosaic. |
