Paul Bunyan. A legendary giant lumberjack in many folk tales, an American folk hero of the Pacific Northwest. Original- ly, the tales described a French Canadian, Bon Jean. Among the prodigious feats credited to Paul Bunyan are the creation of the Grand Canyon, and the invention of the double-bitted ax. When his crews and his huge blue ox Babe logged winters on the Big Onion River it was “so cold that cuss words froze in the air, thawing out the next Fourth of July with a din.” See sock saunders. |
